How to Cook Ham: Roasted, Broiled, and Pan Fried

Whether you’re cooking a spiral-cut ham, baking a glazed ham for a crowd, or just pan-frying a weeknight ham steak-and-potatoes meal, follow these steps for cooking ham that is both tasty and moist.

How to Bake a Ham

Prepare ham with spices or glazes as directed by your recipe. Roast ham as follows:

  1. Line roasting pan with aluminum foil for easy clean-up. Preheat oven to 325°F for hams weighing less than 2 pounds.
  2. Insert a meat thermometer in the center of the thickest part of the ham, making sure the tip does not rest in fat or touch bone. Don't cover the ham or add water.
  3. Place ham, fat side up, on a rack in a shallow roasting pan. As fat in the ham melts, the ham self-bastes, making other basting unnecessary.
  4. Roast ham as directed in the Charts and Reference Guides until the thermometer reads 135°F. The ham will continue to cook after you take it out of the oven.
  5. Take the ham out of the oven and cover loosely with a tent of aluminum foil. Let stand for 15 to 20 minutes or until ham reaches 140°F. After standing, the ham also will be easier to carve.

How to Broil Ham

For quick, easy preparation of smaller cuts of ham, follow these steps:

  1. Set oven to Broil. For easy cleanup, first line broiler pan with aluminum foil.
  2. Place ham on rack over a broiler pan. Position the pan so the top of the ham is 4 to 5 inches from the heat.
  3. To find out how long to cook ham, broil ham as directed in the Charts and Reference Guides, turning ham once.

How to Pan Broil & Fry Ham

For small cooked ham slices, pan cooking works well:

  1. Heat a nonstick skillet or regular skillet containing a small amount of vegetable oil over medium heat for 5 minutes. Don’t add water.
  2. Place ham in skillet. Cook ham uncovered until hot, turning occasionally. Learn how long to cook a ham in Charts and Reference Guides. Drain excess drippings from the skillet as they form.
